Maytag Dryer Error Code E2
Thermistor short circuit — temperature sensor failure
The most common cause of the E2 error on a Maytag dryer is thermistor shorted (~70% of cases); start with: test the thermistor.
What Does Error Code E2 Mean on a Maytag Dryer?
Thermistor short circuit — temperature sensor failure.
E2 fires when the control board measures abnormally low resistance on the thermistor circuit — typically under about 500 ohms versus a normal ~10k ohms at room temperature. That out-of-range reading is interpreted as a short, so the control flags an invalid temperature signal and halts heating. Unlike E1, which indicates an open circuit (very high or infinite resistance), E2 points to a shorted sensor or wiring shorted to the chassis rather than a broken connection or loss of continuity.
What Causes Error Code E2?
Here are the most common causes in order of frequency. Start with the most likely cause before moving to the next:
- 1 Thermistor shorted 70% of cases
- 2 Wiring pinched/shorted to chassis 20% of cases
- 3 Control board sensor circuit fault 10% of cases
How to Fix Maytag Dryer Error Code E2
- 1
Test the thermistor
Room temperature should read ~10k ohms. Near 0 ohms = shorted.
🔩 Multimeter - 2
Inspect the wiring
Look for pinched or melted wiring shorting the thermistor.
- 3
Replace the thermistor
A shorted thermistor cannot be repaired.
🔩 Maytag dryer thermistor ($15–$40)⚠️ Unplug before servicing.
How to Reset Error Code E2
After replacing the thermistor, unplug 1 minute then restart.
