Refrigerator Not Cooling: Causes and Fixes
A fridge that runs but won't cool usually has dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, or an iced-over evaporator from a defrost-system fault. Clean the coils first (the most common and easiest fix), then check whether the evaporator fan is running and whether the back of the freezer is iced up.
What to Check First
- 1
Clean the condenser coils (behind the lower kick plate or on the back) — dust-clogged coils are the #1 cause of weak cooling.
- 2
Confirm the condenser fan (near the compressor) spins — heat won't shed if it's stalled.
- 3
Listen for the evaporator fan inside the freezer; open the door and press the light switch to keep it running.
- 4
Check the freezer back panel for ice buildup — heavy frost means a defrost-system fault (heater, sensor, or control).
- 5
Verify the temperature setting wasn't bumped and the vents between freezer and fridge aren't blocked by food.
