Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: Causes and Fixes
An ice maker that stops usually has a frozen fill tube, a closed or kinked water line, a clogged water filter, or freezer temperatures too warm to freeze cubes (needs ≤ 0°F / -18°C). Thaw the fill tube, confirm water supply, and change the filter.
What to Check First
- 1
Confirm freezer temperature is at or below 0°F (-18°C) — warmer than that and cubes won't form.
- 2
Check the water filter — an overdue filter chokes flow; replace it and confirm the supply valve is open.
- 3
Thaw a frozen fill tube (the small tube feeding the mold) with warm water or a hair dryer.
- 4
Make sure the ice maker's wire/feeler arm or the on/off switch is in the ON position.
- 5
Listen for the fill valve buzzing during the fill — a dead valve means no water reaches the mold.
