Whirlpool Oven Error Code F3-E1
Oven temperature sensor short circuit
The most common cause of the F3-E1 error on a Whirlpool oven is sensor shorted internally (~65% of cases); start with: test the sensor.
What Does Error Code F3-E1 Mean on a Whirlpool Oven?
Oven temperature sensor short circuit.
The control board continuously monitors the resistance of the RTD oven temperature sensor, which normally sits near 1,080 ohms at room temperature and rises as the cavity heats. F3-E1 fires when that circuit reads near-zero resistance, signaling a short. The board interprets this as an impossibly high temperature and locks out heating to prevent overheating. Unlike F3-E0 (open circuit / infinite resistance), F3-E1 specifically indicates a shorted sensor, pinched wire grounding to the chassis, or a shorted control input.
What Causes Error Code F3-E1?
Here are the most common causes in order of frequency. Start with the most likely cause before moving to the next:
- 1 Sensor shorted internally 65% of cases
- 2 Wiring pinched against chassis causing short 25% of cases
- 3 Control board sensor input shorted 10% of cases
How to Fix Whirlpool Oven Error Code F3-E1
- 1
Test the sensor
Room temp should read ~1,080 ohms. Near 0 = shorted.
🔩 Multimeter - 2
Inspect wiring
Look for any pinch points along the sensor wiring.
- 3
Replace the sensor
A shorted sensor cannot be repaired.
🔩 Whirlpool oven temperature sensor ($20–$50)
How to Reset Error Code F3-E1
After replacing sensor, test with 350°F bake cycle.
Note: If the error returns after resetting, the underlying issue has not been resolved. Work through the fix steps above.
